Dr. Per Hall, M.D., Ph.D., is associate Professor at the Karolinska Institute and works at Radiumhemmet, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, where he is head of the Department of Cancer Epidemiology. His clinical work has mainly focused on thyroid disorders and breast cancer. His scientific field is etiological cancer epidemiology and he is, since the 1980s, responsible for the follow-up of the Swedish cohorts of radioiodine exposed patients. He and his group study cancer risks in patients exposed to external gamma radiation because of a skin hemangioma and bengin breast disorders. More recent studies focus on the risk of a subsequent cancer among those treated for a testicular- or ovarian cancer, cataract development after external gamma exposure, and susceptibility for ionizing radiation in breast cancer patients. He is the principal investigator of a NIH contract aiming at study the late effects in Swedish patients exposed to the contrast medium Thorotrast. Presently he co-ordinates two EC contracts aiming at the study of the cancer risks in the closed city of Ozyorsk, Russia, where the USSR atomic bombs were developed, along the Techa River, Russia, and in the Semipalatinsk Test Site area close to Kazakstan.
