Measuring the iodine concentration in urine is for some specialized laboratories routine work. However, there has until now been no simple "bedside" assessment method available. The main problem are substances in the urine which interfere with the chemical reaction of the assay. Merck KGaA has developed a new, patented semiquantitative test which overcomes this problem by removing these substances with a special activated-charcoal-filled column. In the eluate the iodine concentration is measured by a colorimetric reaction (oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine with peracetic acid, catalyzed by iodine). The appearing colour can be compared with that of a colour scale, allowing the differentiation between <10 µg/dl, 11-30 µg/dl, and > 30 µg/dl. The Merck Rapid Urinary Iodide Test has been validated by comparing it with a standard method in the University of Würzburg (Dr. Rendl). It is commercially available since early 1998. |
