Posology and method of administration

The individual daily dose should be assessed by laboratory tests and clinical examinations. In elderly patients, patients with coronary heart disease or with severe or persisting hypothyroidism treatment with thyroid hormones is to be started very cautiously, i.e. a low initial dose should be increased gradually and at longer intervals while the thyroid hormones are frequently checked. Experience has shown that a low dose is sufficient also in patients with low body weight and a large nodular goiter.

Hypothyroidism in adults
Initial: 1 tablet Novothyral 25 / day

After 14 days increase of the daily dose by 1 tablet Novothyral 25 at 2-week intervals.


Maintenance 1/2 - 1 (-2) tablets Novothyral 100 or 1/2 - 1 (-2) tablets Novothyral 75 / day
Hypothyroidism in children
Children 1 - 3 years: 2 tablets Novothyral 25 / day
Children 3 - 7 1/2 years: 1 tablet Novothyral 75 / day
Children 7 1/2 - 12 years: 1 tablet Novothyral 75 to 1 tablet Novothyral 100 / day
Infants 1/4 year: 1 - 1 1/2 tablet Novothyral 25 / day
Infants 1/2 year: 1 1/2 -2 tablets Novothyral 25 / day

The dosage for a complete substitution of the hormone requirement by Novothyral 25 during childhood is 4.6 tablets/m2 body surface/day. The optimum substitution dose required in the individual case depends on the remaining hormonal capacity of the hypothyroid gland.


Following thyroidectomy due to malignant thyroid gland tumor: 1 - 2 (-3) tablets Novothyral 100 or 2 - 3 tablets Novothyral 75 / day


The full daily dose is swallowed whole with a little liquid in the morning on an empty stomach, at least half an hour before breakfast.
Duration of administration: in hypothyroidism and thyroidectomy mostly all one's life, in non-toxic goiter and prevention of goiter recurrence several months or years up to all one's life.


Contraindications

Hyperthyroidism of any origin.
