Posology and method of administration
Each patient has his own optimal thyroid hormone level. The dosage recommendations
given in the following are therefore only a guideline for the therapy of the various
thyroid diseases. Experience has shown that a lower levothyroxine sodium dose is
sufficient to treat elderly patients and this also applies to low-weight patients or
patients with a large nodular goiter. The important factor in determining the optimal
individual thyroid hormone therapy is clinical observation of the patient and monitoring
of the thyroid hormone parameters.
The daily doses can be given in a single administration.
Ingestion: as a single daily dose in the morning on an empty stomach, half an hour
before breakfast, preferably with a little liquid.
Duration of treatment: usually for life in the case of hypothyroidism and after
strumectomy or thyroidectomy; over a period of months or for life for the treatment of
euthyroid goitre and for prevention of recurrent goitre; concomitant therapy for treatment
of hyperthyroidism for the period in which the antithyroid drug is given.
