Gómez Acotto et al., Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Lyon, France,
measured bone mineral density, using ultrasound measurement of the calcaneus
and densitometry of lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total body in 9 patients
with hyperthyroidism before treatment and after 24 months of antithyroid
therapy. Results were compared with matched controls. Both ultrasound and
bone densitometry showed rapid increase of bone mineral content after initiation
of therapy. It is concluded that ultrasound is an accurate and highly reproducible
method for the assessment of bone mineral content.
