Thyroid autoantibody determination has originally evolved and been established
as an aid to the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD). As methods
have been advanced during the last decade and have become more sensitive
and more reliable, antibodies turned out to be markers of autoimmunity
that may precede onset of clinically overt disease for a long period of
time. Usefulness of antibody determination has nowadays to be judged as
for its
- diagnostic efficiency,
- its predictive character and
- its prognostic value.
