During pregnancy maternal immune reactions are regulated to prevent rejection
of the fetal allograft(44). Both humoral and cellmediated immunity have
been reported to be depressed during pregnancy(45,46). Thus, both the humoral
and cellular immune reactions are involved in the development of postpartum
thyroid disease but the(47,48) exact role of the alterations in the different
subsets still requires further clarification.
