Increased iodine intake and autoimmune thyroiditis - General conclusions

  • It appears that the main problem in the understanding of AT epidemiology and the possible role of high iodine intake in its etiology is whether it may occur selectively in genetically prediposed individuals or not and how to define such genetic predisposition.

  • Concerning the actual global project of WHO, UNICEF, and ICC/IDD to eradicate iodine deficiency before the year 2000, again the view of WHO Statement should be presented, e.g.
"As with all preventive public health measures, the decision to ensure universal salt iodization will be made by weighing the potential risk of excess intake for the few against the well-documented risk of mental and physiological impairment for the many if a deficiency is uncorrected."
